I guess if Valentine’s Day was a real holiday, none of you would be at work today. Then again, good luck telling your significant other that Valentine’s Day isn’t a real holiday. I wouldn’t go there that’s for sure.
In keeping with the spirit of the day, I’m going to share with you all the things that I love about this business from my perch up above the fray as one of the very few true journalists still covering this industry.
Attending dealer meetings and other industry events – It may not always be convenient to be flying around the country for 2-3 days at a clip for a dealer meeting when you have no one back in the home office picking up the slack, but these events never fail to educate me and excite me about this business.
Interviewing dealers – If it weren’t for this job, which I’ve been doing since 1986, I doubt if I would have ever had the opportunity to meet let alone interview anyone responsible for selling office technology or running an office technology dealership. I consider myself fortunate that so many dealers over the years have been gracious about sharing their time and insights with me. Without that, I doubt if I’d be able to do my job.
Interviewing OEMs and solutions and services providers – It’s always great to discover what makes these folks tick and what makes the things they sell tick.
The people – I’ve met a lot of good people over the years who serve this industry in various capacities. Some have become friends while others are peers who I have the distinct pleasure of spending time with at events throughout the year.
The industry publications and clients I wrote for that are no longer here – Admittedly, in some instances this was a love-hate relationship, but without those opportunities, I never would have achieved the credibility I have or been able to make a living doing something that fewer and fewer people are able to do these days.
Those of you who read my articles and subscribe to TWII newsletter – That’s why I’m still here.
I don’t want you to misunderstand me because even though I’m writing about myself, it’s not me that I’m focusing on, but this industry that I’m enamored with. So for those of you reading, will you be my Valentine?
Thanks for reading.
