Melville, NY (June 5, 2023) — Canon’s long-standing commitment to sustainability initiatives and positively impacting its surrounding environment continued recently when employees at the Canon Americas headquarters in Melville, New York were invited to bring in gently-used books for a program run by Book Fairies.
Workers for Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, contributed 15 boxes – representing 470 pounds – of donated books for people in need throughout the metropolitan New York area.
Founded in 2012, Book Fairies gathers new and gently used books to distribute to children living in under-resourced areas across Long Island and New York City. Book Fairies is now the largest book-donation organization in the tri-state area and has expanded its operation in supporting literacy programs and building school, classroom and home libraries.
“Book Fairies is grateful to Canon and its employees for their commitment to community service and support of our mission,” said Eileen Minogue, the executive director of Book Fairies. “This multi-year collaboration with Canon has provided thousands of gently-used books that were upcycled to our neighbors in need. In addition, books that were not considered “in shape” for distribution were recycled keeping them out of landfills making it a multi-level benefit to the community. We appreciate this collaboration and commend Canon for merging purpose with profit.”
The contributions to Book Fairies came on the heels of April’s Earth Day celebration, where Canon employees at the Melville location were invited to bring in old electronics for recycling. In total, Canon collected nearly 2,000 pounds of e-waste, an increase from approximately 1,500 pounds in 2022.
