It occurred to Thomas Sheng that a toner technology his company, Avision, offers may actually result in the company making less money. Still, the president of the Taiwan-based manufacturer knows the cost savings enjoyed by end-users and the positive impact on the environment are equally important, if not more so. From a reseller standpoint, the profit margins are superior.
The technology in question is the EzToner refillable toner bottle kit. It relies on a patented airflow system that enables users to refill their Avision EzToner Cartridges in about 15 seconds without creating a mess. Users can just insert the bottle and twist, creating an air-tight lock between the bottle and the cartridge. The EzToner Cartridges are currently available for use with the 30- and 35-page Avision A4 MFPs.
These toner cartridges can be refilled up to four times, which translates into fewer spent cartridges. Sheng also notes that by refilling the cartridge up to four times, it helps extend the life of the rollers, which could outlast the life of a typical cartridge. However, maximizing roller life and selling more cartridges doesn’t fit the type manufacturer model, but Sheng feels end-users will find it economical and environmental-friendly.
The bottles can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of a typical toner cartridge. However, Sheng notes reseller partners can make double the margins of a one-off cartridge.
“We want to be environmentally friendly, make less cartridges and utilize the full life of the rollers,” he said. “After 15,000 pages, the rollers need to be replaced and it’s time for a new cartridge.”
While the refillable bottle kit can be ideal for many settings, Sheng sees it being a particularly good fit for agencies with a large population of printers and the need for a large inventory of toner, such as hospital and government departments. And the refilling process is extremely easy to learn.
