Model for Success: Fearlessly Striving for Innovation has Served Difference Maker Peter Salzano Well

Peter Salzano

Starting a business from scratch is a daunting task. It offers little in the form of guarantees, and the sweat equity that must accompany the financial commitment doesn’t always produce an immediate profit. Or any at all, for that matter. Our friends at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics confirm as such: nearly half of all new businesses (45%) fail within the first five years in business, and only 35% make it beyond the first 10.

Inking his first major contract as the founder of Network Digital Office Systems was all the traction Peter Salzano needed. What it did was validate the business model he crafted and the relentless toiling that went into those initial building blocks. In the process, it also confirmed to Salzano that fortune favors the bold.

“It reinforced the importance of perseverance, innovation and staying true to our core values,” said Salzano, a 2024 ENX Magazine Difference Maker. “This experience taught me that success often comes from taking calculated risks and being willing to innovate.”

Efficient, cost-effective solutions complemented that innovation. Salzano takes great satisfaction from seeing the real-world impact his dealer’s solutions have on client businesses. Improving efficiencies, reducing costs and adopting more sustainable practices provide more than its share of fulfillment, and he’s driven by the constant pursuit of innovation and the desire to make a difference: for clients, the environment and the community alike.

Salzano’s visionary leadership, strong commitment to sustainability and deep focus on customer satisfaction make for a solid value proposition. “I strive to lead by example, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation within our team,” he said. “By prioritizing eco-friendly practices and integrating cutting-edge technology, we provide our clients with solutions that not only meet their needs but also contribute to a better environment. My commitment to philanthropy and giving back to the community also resonates with my peers, showcasing a holistic approach to business that goes beyond mere profit.”

Pirate Power

Salzano walked out the doors of Seton Hall University, armed with a BS in marketing and accounting, and segued into his career as a sales representative for Pitney Bowes. For the next 12 years, he honed his sales and customer relations acumen, and it opened his eyes to the growing importance of office technology solutions. Coupled with his degree—which gave him insight into the financial and strategic aspects of the business—it paved the path toward having all the ingredients necessary to launch a start-up.

Business ownership became a reality in 1997. But while at Pitney Bowes, Salzano received a succinct observation from a pivotal mentor. The major takeaway was the importance of building strong relationships with clients and always putting their needs first. It proved to be a key puzzle piece.

“The wisdom imparted was simple yet profound: ‘Success in business comes from understanding your customers’ problems and providing solutions that truly add value.’ This principle has been a cornerstone of my approach to business and has guided me throughout my career,” he said.

Fairfield, New Jersey-based Network Digital Office Systems is coming off a 2023 that saw the company reap solid growth with net-new accounts, coupled with no erosion of existing clients. It’s important to Salzano that 2024 and beyond is dedicated toward sustainable office technology solutions, building upon its product line with more eco-friendly options, and reducing the dealer’s own carbon footprint.

Client Care

Taking care of the client walks hand in hand with being a good corporate citizen, according to Salzano. “On a personal level, I am committed to enhancing our customer experience by leveraging the latest technologies to provide even more efficient and tailored solutions,” he said. “Additionally, we plan to increase our philanthropic efforts, supporting more non-profit organizations and community initiatives.”

Salzano believes continuous improvement is the optimal track to remaining competitive and relevant in the office technology sector. Investments in research and development enables the dealer to maintain pace with industry advancements.

“Fostering a culture of continuous learning within our team will ensure we remain adaptable and innovative,” he said. “Strengthening our customer feedback mechanisms will help us better understand and respond to their evolving needs. Additionally, expanding our sustainability initiatives and finding new ways to reduce our environmental impact will further solidify our commitment to eco-friendly practices.”

With the exception of his family and line of work, perhaps there is no greater passion in Salzano’s life than baseball. This dates back to his college playing days as captain of the Seton Hall University team. Family (which includes his son, 2023 Difference Maker Matthew) is a driving force, and spending time with them—whether kicking back at home or enjoying the beaches in South Florida or the Jersey Shore—provides fulfillment and happiness. Adding balance to Salzano’s life is accomplished through participating in community activities and supporting non-profit organizations.
