Many workers, particularly those who’ve amassed a fair amount of tenure, often find their jobs to be stagnating or at least lacking in the change-of-pace department. The same old, same old is what causes those concentric circles to do their hypnotic eye spins. And it may not be that the employee hates his or her position, but is rather in need of a little variety.
Still, you won’t hear any complaints from Kim Murphy. Following an eight-year stint as a legal secretary in Boston, she’s spent the past 38 years loving life in her role with Bay Copy of Rockland, Massachusetts. No, make that UBEO Business Services, which acquired Bay Copy last December. And while many people fear becoming a victim of change at this juncture in their career, Murphy is finding new and exciting ways to spice up her day.
“I am driven by the desire to learn new things, and it is rewarding to continually gain greater understanding of the business,” said Murphy, a 2024 ENX Magazine Difference Maker. “I enjoy always improving my skills and knowledge. I enjoy building strong relationships with our customers, and working to ensure that they will always feel they have made the right decision in choosing our company.”
Bay Copy certainly made the right decision in onboarding Murphy. During her time with the New England dealer, she’s handled just about every duty imaginable—equipment sales, quotes, contract billing and accounts receivable. At the time of the acquisition, Murphy was operations manager, and she now serves as office manager of UBEO’s Rockland branch. In fact, she served as a liaison between the two companies, helping to ensure a smooth integration.
Team Player
Becoming operations manager represented a milestone achievement in Murphy’s career, and it required learning many new tasks and responsibilities. As someone who values working and collaborating with teammates, it proved to be a rewarding experience for her.
“I’ve always wanted to learn as much as I could, and I reached out for assistance when needed,” she said. “The other managers in my office were always there to help me and guide me, and to work with me. We have a great team.”
It was Bay Copy President Ray Belanger who helped nurture Murphy’s career and taught her much about the business, including prioritizing the needs of the customer. “It’s important for us all to remember that we and our customers are a team,” she added. “Our mission is to be sure that the equipment our customers purchase or lease from us continues to help their businesses grow and prosper.”
As the job continues to invigorate her, talk of retirement isn’t in the near future. “I want to do my part to help ensure the growth of the company for many years to come,” she said.
Murphy and her husband, John, have been married for 44 years and have two children and one grandchild. Her daughter, Laura, is also a Bay Copy/UBEO employee. When she’s not dedicating time to her family, Murphy enjoys the great outdoors—hiking, walking trails, camping, cruises and hitting the beach, along with bowling. She’s also a member of Sodality of Our Lady society at her local church, Holy Apostles Parish. The society helps support community needs.
