If the folks in this industry have learned any one thing over the years, it’s we’ve got to embrace change.
There’s always going to be resistance to change, and maybe a little kicking and screaming along the way, but in the end, change is this industry’s best friend. Without it, well, a lot of us wouldn’t be around to complain about it.
Change is what keeps this industry booming and vibrant. I’m not going to run down the litany of changes that have impacted this industry. You know what I’m about, but let’s generalize and say that virtually every technology oriented change has had a positive impact on the industry. If those of us who have been around for any length of time have learned anything, it’s that change is a never-ending process. Just when you think you’ve adapted to one change, along comes another and it’s time to retool and reeducate once again.
Less positive, and maybe one can describe this as an evolutionary process (i.e., survival of the fittest) have been the closures, mergers, acquisitions, etc. that have taken place in all corners of the office imaging industry over the years. Some of those changes weren’t all that embraceable, but they happened and they’re still happening and the effect they’ve had on the industry can be heatedly debated depending what side of the fence you’re sitting on.
Other changes that are equally evolutionary are personnel changes. Those continue to occur in all segments of our industry. Nowhere does the door resolve faster than at the OEM level. I’m sure there are some folks who have logged time at every East Coast OEM or close to it. Despite those changes, many of those folks are still here immersed in this current generation of changes.
I think we should all consider ourselves lucky to still be a part of those changes.
