Last week I mentioned how I’ve been reading the Elite Dealer nomination forms that have been arriving daily as we prepare to make this year’s selections. (In case you missed it, I announced last week that the deadline to submit nomination forms has been extended to Sept. 15.) One of the questions on the form is ‘What makes your dealership a great place to work?” As much as financial success says a lot about a dealership, the work environment and company culture speaks volumes as well about that dealership. That’s one reason why I’m always impressed when a dealership is acknowledged as one of the best places to work in their state. And there’s always a few of those among the Elite Dealers.
Anyway, I was at a friend’s house on Monday for a Labor Day get together and one of my friends, a high school guidance counselor, was discussing her work environment. Get this: Every morning the principal waits by the front door of the school with a clipboard writing down the time teachers and staff arrive at work. Can you believe that?
While describing some of the daily happenings in the administrative offices where the counselors work, she mentioned how one of her co-workers has Dilbert cartoons posted all over his cubicle. That prompted another friend, who works in IT, to observe, “You know there’s problems when employees are posting Dilbert cartoons.”
I never thought about that, then again, I don’t really read Dilbert, but am well aware of the little guy. And I’ve worked at a couple of jobs in my day where Dilbert cartoons could have easily been plastered across everyone’s cubicles. I share this observation with you in case you’re looking for clues about your workplace. Maybe my friend who made the observation about the Dilbert cartoons is wrong and these are just employees with a sense of humor, but maybe, just maybe something deeper is going on.
To be honest, if I were to see a Dilbert cartoon posted in someone’s office today, I’d start wondering.
Thanks for reading.
