Norristown, PA – In 1995 Laser Wizard, Inc., revolutionized the laser printer service industry by creating the first laser printer diagnostic test equipment. Today, it has a far more ambitious goal: eliminate theft of print media and reduce the prescription drug abuse epidemic with their newest product, the SmartTrayLock. The SmartTrayLock is a remotely operated intelligent apparatus that prevents unauthorized removal of print media such as checks, certificates, letterhead and prescription drug forms from the security paper tray of the laser printer that it is attached to without hindering the operation of non-security paper trays.
“We have identified more than two dozen different ways that print media can be removed in less than forty-five seconds without detection from a laser printer that is equipped with a conventional paper tray lock. In fact the majority of these thefts can be accomplished in less than ten seconds,” says Jeff Teets, vice president/inventor at Laser Wizard. “Blank prescription forms were once considered to be a low value, low harm item that required minimal security requirements. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact just one paper tray of prescription forms can be sold on the street for $50,000 which if used to create forged prescriptions has the potential to acquire more than 51,000 OxyContin pills that can be sold for more than $1.5 million.”
Prescription drug abuse claims the lives of approximately 40,000 people and cost the United States roughly $100 billion annually. Over the past decade, prescription drug forgery has increased 200 percent, making it the primary source of illicit prescription drugs. The effects of this problem are far reaching, affecting medical cost, skewing statistics, increasing crime, and fueling the heroin epidemic. In May 2016, a New York father and son were arrested for prescription forgery. They produced 462 fraudulent prescriptions from stolen prescription forms. This is less than one paper tray of worth of prescription forms. As a result, 51,000 illicit opioid pills were sold for a total of $1.5 million. With every fraudulent prescription that was produced a medical practitioner became a victim of medical identity theft.
The SmartTrayLock eliminates theft of valuable forms by eliminating the shortcomings of today’s ineffective key operated paper tray locks. A remotely operated, intelligent locking mechanism prevents the opening of the paper tray while simultaneously averting unauthorized paper feed commands from being utilized to force the printer to feed blank pages from the locked paper tray of the printer. The status of the lock system is constantly being monitored to ensure total security of the print media. In the event that an error is detected, the SmartTrayLock will display an error message that coincides with the fault and prevent media from being drawn from the security tray until the error condition is corrected.
A special tamper evident feature has been developed to thwart the more aggressive thief. The SmartTrayLock will place itself into Tamper Evident Mode in the event that a thief attempts to bypass the system. This mode will alert the operator to the attempted theft and permanently disable the security tray from operation until a special release code is entered. This intelligent locking system will even place itself into Refuse Mode automatically after a selected time of inactivity, preventing media from being drawn from the security paper tray. The SmartTrayLock provides an extraordinary level of media security without affecting the operation of additional paper trays within the laser printer. Simply put, the SmartTrayLock turns your tray two within your laser printer into an intelligent vault.
“We worked hard to find the perfect balance between ease of use and effectiveness.” Says Teets “The SmartTrayLock has exceeded all of our expectations. The level of security that it offers is unprecedented to any product that is available and easier to operate than a mechanical key type paper tray lock.
