DocuWare Turns iPhone and iPad into Scanner
Sept. 17, 2013 – PaperScan, a free app by DocuWare, is now available for turning an iPhone or iPad into a document scanner. DocuWare developed PaperScan to conveniently bring order to paper clutter.
Scanned documents need to be of a high quality for further processing. At the same time, they need to be captured in a small size and familiar format, so that they can be easily printed, integrated into office workflows or shared. Using a smartphone as a scanner is an ideal option for anyone who needs to scan receipts, business cards, or letters, whether in the office, at home or while traveling, according to a DocuWare press rlease. DocuWare is now offering PaperScan for this type of mobile use.
Using PaperScan is simple: aim a smartphone or tablet over the paper; the device automatically captures the image, cuts it to size, and creates a perfect PDF file. Thanks to the high scan quality, documents can then be automatically stored using DocuWare’s Intelligent Indexing Service.
PaperScan isn’t only for use with DocuWare solutions. The high-quality PDF documents generated can also be directly placed in a personal Dropbox folder, sent by e-mail or printed via AirPrint.
For comfort and scan quality, DocuWare developed special algorithms for document recognition and the patents are pending. PaperScan is now available at the Apple store as a free download (search one word: paperscan) for iPhone version 4 and up and iPad. To learn more go to: http://paperscanapp.com. An Android version will follow by year’s end.

Canon Solutions America Launches “Book of One”
Sept. 11, 2013 – Canon Solutions America, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon U.S.A., Inc., recently launched “Book of One” Océ PRISMA software extension, an on-demand publishing tool. Book of One offers a workflow solution for both continuous feed and cutsheet products in order to address the challenges that many book publishers and printers are experiencing today.
Book of One automates digital book production through a batch, barcode, and scanning process. Jobs are grouped based on parameters that improve process efficiency. This includes trim size, media, imposition, finishing (perfect or saddle stitched), and most importantly, page count. The intelligent automation provided by Book of One is a good example of the type of end-to-end automation required for a successful future in book manufacturing.
A unique aspect of Book of One, according to Canon is its ability to impose multiple titles on a single sheet or web width, even when those titles are being manufactured in different form factors. When combined with JDF-enabled partner finishing solutions, this imposition scheme allows efficient runs of multiple titles with various unit counts, minimizing waste and offering optimum throughput. Using JDF/JMF, bi-directional communication throughout the manufacturing process ensures automated bindery and press set-up, communication with order entry and management systems, and more.
Other important advantages for profitable and automated manufacturing of short run books include the Print File Enhancer capability, which allows operators to enhance and/or modify PDF files. This function enables placement of barcodes for tracking page count and marrying covers with book blocks and the ability to insert pages or shift contents to allow for gutters and other factors.

Konica Minolta and Komori Debut World’s First 23”x29” Digital Inkjet Press at PRINT 13
Sept. 4, 2013 – Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta) and Komori Corporation, Inc. (Komori) have announced the KM-1/IS29 Inkjet Press will be showcased as a technology preview at Konica Minolta Booth #518 during PRINT 13 from September 8-12 at McCormick Place South in Chicago. Co-developed by both companies, the KM-1/IS29 combines Konica Minolta’s UV inkjet technology with Komori’s expertise in precision manufacturing to provide high-speed output, superior color quality, and reliable digital throughput, according to a Konica Minolta press release.
The KM-1/IS29 is a digital, UV color inkjet press that processes cut-sheet pages up to 29 inches in size. Output of 3,300 sheets per hour simplex, and 1,650 sheets per hour duplex make the KM-1/IS29 ideal for commercial printing environments where larger size cut-sheet pages are necessary and quality is important. The larger sheet size reportedly improves throughput and efficiency. The maximum page size of 23”x29” enables six-up letter page layouts, a wide variety of gang runs and easy integration with existing production workflows, making it the ideal solution for short run, variable data (VDP) and fast turnaround jobs.
Imaging on the KM-1/IS29 is supported with “inkjet head,” “ink,” and “process” technologies owned by Konica Minolta. The latest inkjet head technology enables superior image quality at 1200×1200 dpi, and the newly developed exclusive UV ink allows printing on coated or non-coated paper including standard offset paper without any pre-coating. In addition, Konica Minolta’s tried and tested process technology provides high quality, stable printing.
To support this new digital offering, Komori designed a new sheet transport system, a new cylinder configuration as well as a new sheet reversal mechanism to enable high speed two-sided printing. The KM-1/IS29 can instantly switch from single to double sided printing with no operator intervention.
Commercial availability is targeted to begin at the end of 2014. Starting country/region will be determined at a later date.

Canon U.S.A. Integrates Enhanced Large Format Color Capabilities in its New S-Series Printers
Sept. 4, 2013 – Canon U.S.A. is set to expand its imagePROGRAF large format S-Series printers, adding the 44-inch iPF8400S and 24-inch iPF6400S printers, which will offer enhanced print management and color control capabilities, versus the previous models. The new printers are designed to aid graphic arts providers in maximizing productivity while printing their jobs, helping to ensure output is consistent and accurate. In addition, the new imagePROGRAF models boast features with the ability to help ensure color consistency of an entire fleet of iPFX400 series printers across multiple office locations and environments. With the ability to execute high-volume, reliable output, it is well-suited for print service providers and in-plant operations that receive frequent, large-quantity requests from clients with high-standards for color consistency.
“The color calibration capabilities of our newest imagePROGRAF models arm providers with an advantage in today’s highly competitive production printing market,” said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Marketing, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A. “These machines are designed to excel in demanding industry segments, and we are confident that our customers will be impressed with their efficient, accurate and consistent management of high-volume print jobs enabled by the calibration capabilities and print management features included in these models.”
The Canon iPFX400S printer lineup includes the Color Calibration Management Console (CCMC), remote functionality, and scheduled color check features, that once networked, help improve access and general operation of an iPFX400S printer fleet versus the prior models, whether printers are in close proximity, reside in nearby rooms or even exist in separate buildings.
With intuitive software programs and the CCMC, the new devices can help streamline print jobs and ensure resources are used efficiently. These features further expand the capabilities of each printer and can help providers manage a diverse range of client requests, including the ability to print from one machine or a fleet of printers.
Canon’s new imagePROGRAF iPFX400S models – the iPF8400S and iPF6400S printers – are expected to be available in mid-September 2013 through Authorized Canon Dealers and Premier Partner Resellers and will have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $4,995 and $2,995, respectively.
